What you need to know about grade 5:
Grade 5 challenge students as reading of more complex books begins, especially in science and social studies. For leisure, they are encouraged to read novels. Usually at this stage, children start to see that reading is not always “fun”. For this reason, parents, teachers, and tutors need to put more focus on the student’s and signs of struggle need to be addressed immediately. Falling behind at this stage will create many difficulties for future learning. Practice is everything. Encourage your children to read by asking them to recap an article in the newspaper for you or to recap story books, novels, children’s science books, and etc. If children see adults read, they will automatically turn to books too.
As with other grades, how well your write, depends on how well you read. Writing gets another step harder. Expect your children to write book reports and more elaborate essays. Teachers in grade 5 will be putting heavy emphasis on the “writing process”; brainstorm, outline, rough draft, revising, editing, and final draft. Expect more attention on fuller paragraphs, clear points, and providing clear compare and contrast points.
Students in the fifth grade should have “mastered” the math facts, and will be working on more complex problems. Order of Operations is introduced and more importantly, your child should understand how those mathematical operations work. They will also continue to master the concepts on fractions, decimals, percentage, measurement and geometry. Formulas will be introduced, and students are expected to start memorizing and applying them.
